Our vineyards tell a story with roots stretching back centuries, with every vine shoot gracefully reaching toward the Sicilian sky. Our winery uses the dry-farming method, a practice that allows the vines to survive without irrigation, prompting them to seek moisture deep within the soil. This natural process fosters strong, deep roots, fully respecting the earth’s cycle and reducing waste.

The Barraco winery’s main vineyards are located in six distinct areas within the Marsala region.

The Contrada Bausa vineyard is home not only to our winery but also to three important grape varieties: Catarratto, Perricone, and Nero d’Avola. Here, the soil is clayey and rich in cuti—a vivid reminder of ancient seabeds that tell the story of a time when these lands were bathed by the sea. The cuti, imbued with coastal sediments, impart an extraordinary minerality to the wines, bearing witness to the intertwining of history and nature that makes our territory unique. Here, we use the Marsala-style alberello training system for Perricone (or Pignatello) and the Guyot system for Nero d’Avola and Catarratto.

The Petrosino vineyard—which we call Vignammare— is located just 30 meters from the coast south of Marsala. Here, the grapes ripen, developing a unique salinity and character: the soil is sandy and rich in limestone, and sometimes contains seaweed. These shores are entirely protected by Posidonia oceanica, and it often happens that the seaweed is carried among the vines by the southeasterly Scirocco wind and blown back toward the coast by the northwesterly Maestrale wind. This extraordinary vineyard is the birthplace of our famous Biancammare.

The Rina Vecchia vineyard is the oldest one we have and is located in the Triscina area. Planted in 1975, it has always belonged to our family; its name comes from the unique nature of the soil, which resembles a sand dune—in Sicilian, “rina” variegated with veins of red earth. Here, we harvest no later than mid-August, at dawn, and pick all the grapes by hand, with care and patience, selecting only the best fruit. This is where our Bianco G comes from .

The Rinazzello vineyard is truly one of a kind. Significantly different from any other soil in the Marsala region, it consists mainly of marl and calcarenite, which promote vine growth primarily through optimal drainage (acting like sponges that absorb water and release it gradually) and helping them withstand very hot and dry climates. At the winery, we call it “Trilogy” precisely because it’s like a diamond: luminous, brilliant, and very special. Here we grow the grapes that enrich our Altomare.

At 120 meters above sea level, on the clay-limestone soils of Contrada Casazze, we have been growing our Zibibbo since 2005. Also known as Moscato di Alessandria, it is the most famous aromatic grape variety in western Sicily. Its September harvest marks the culmination of a long process requiring care and patience, as Zibibbo grapes ripen unevenly, with a sugar content that can result in a high alcohol content. At the same time, its delicate skins are particularly susceptible to disease. Yet the winemaking process yields an extraordinary wine, rich with a complex aromatic profile: jasmine, orange blossom, lychee, rosemary, and basil intertwine, vividly evoking all the scents of the Mediterranean.

Our vineyard in Carcitella (Mazara del Vallo) is located about 150 meters above sea level and consists of our“black soils,”which are rich in volcanic rocks and volcanic ash. This is where our harvest begins in early August, and this is where we grow the native red grapes that give rise to the Rosammare label—which also serves as the base for our Metodo Classico Rosé Sparkling Wine.

"Our style is about allowing each varietal to shine."

As part of the agricultural industry, we fully depend on our surrounding, just as it depends on us. That’s why we grow our produce organically and sustainably. Over the past decades the carbon footprint of the winery has been positive, which is something we’re really proud of.
