Our vineyards tell a story rooted in centuries of tradition, with each vine reaching elegantly towards the Sicilian sky. We practise “arido-coltura” a method that allows the plants to thrive without irrigation, encouraging them to seek moisture deep within the soil. This natural process fosters strong, deep roots, fully respecting the earth’s cycles and minimising waste.

The Barraco winery’s main vineyards are spread across six unique sites in the Marsala area.

The vineyards of Contrada Bausa, which house our winery, are home to 3 key varieties: Catarratto, Perricone and Nero d’Avola. The soil here is clay-rich and abundant in cuti, a vivid reminder of a time when these lands were once submerged by the sea. The cuti, enriched by coastal sediments, impart an extraordinary minerality to the wines, reflecting the deep connection between history and nature that makes our land so unique. In this area, we use the traditional alberello marsalese training for Perricone or Pignatello, and guyot for Nero d’Avola and Catarratto.

The Petrosino vineyard – known by us as Vignammare – is located just 30 metres from the coast, south of Marsala. Here, the grapes ripen, developing a unique saltiness and character: the soils are sandy, rich in limestone, and sometimes even contain seaweed. These shores are entirely protected by posidonia oceanica, and it’s not uncommon for seaweed to be carried between the vines by the southeast Scirocco wind, only to be brought back to the coast by the northwest Maestrale. This extraordinary vineyard is the birthplace of our famous Biancammare.

The Rina Vecchia vineyard is the oldest we have and is located in the Triscina area. Planted in 1975, it has always belonged to our family; its name comes from the unique soil, which resembles a sand dune, with “rina” in Sicilian referring to the varied sand, interspersed with veins of red earth. Here, we harvest by mid-August at the latest, at dawn, and we hand-pick the grapes with great care and patience, selecting only the best fruit. This is where our Bianco G is born.

The Rinazzello vineyard is truly one of a kind. Completely different from any other land in the Marsala area, it is primarily composed of marls and calcarenite, which promote vine growth thanks to their excellent drainage properties (acting like sponges that absorb water and release it gradually), helping the vines withstand very hot and dry climates. At the winery, we call it “Trilogy” because it’s like a diamond: bright, radiant, and very special. Here, we grow some of the grapes that enhance our Altomare.

At 120 metres above sea level, on the clay-limestone soils of Contrada Casazze, we’ve been cultivating our Zibibbo since 2005. Also known as Moscato di Alessandria, it’s the most renowned aromatic grape variety in western Sicily. The September harvest marks the peak of a long process of care and patience, as the Zibibbo ripens unevenly, with sugar levels that can lead to higher alcohol content. At the same time, its delicate skins are particularly vulnerable to disease. However, its vinification results in an extraordinary wine, rich in a complex aromatic profile: jasmine, orange blossom, lychee, rosemary, and basil intertwine, evoking the intense fragrances of the Mediterranean.

Our vineyards in Carcitella (Mazara del Vallo), situated around 150m above sea level, are our “black lands,” rich in volcanic stones and cuti. We begin our harvest in the early days of August, and here we grow the native red grapes that give rise to our Rosammare label – the same grapes that form the foundation of our Spumante Rosato Metodo Classico.

"Our style is about allowing each varietal to shine."

As part of the agricultural industry, we fully depend on our surrounding, just as it depends on us. That’s why we grow our produce organically and sustainably. Over the past decades the carbon footprint of the winery has been positive, which is something we’re really proud of.
